Discovery 55, COOL CAT

Broker's Comments

Discovery 55, COOL CAT is a gleaming example of this benchmark bluewater cruising yacht from Ron Holland and the Discovery Team. She was first commissioned in 2013 and is now in her third ownership. All her owners have cherished her. Her first owners used her primary in the Mediterranean before bringing her back to the UK to be sold. In her second ownership she had a substantial refit including all new sails, new coper coat and new Gori propeller. At that time an additional secondary winch was fitted to make shorthanded sailing even easier. She also had new seacocks and a lovely new saloon table with compass rose marquetry built for her by craftsmen at Discovery.

Her current owners bought her in 2020 and have cherished her as you will see from the refit schedule below:

Refit Schedule – 2020 to 2022

June 2020 – Berthon Boat Company, Lymington:

• Replacement of the 24V service battery bank.
• Replacement of the freezer and refrigerator refrigeration units.

October 2021 – Varadero Shipyard, Puerto Calero (Canaries Islands):

• Light sanding of the teak deck.
• Replacement of 3 x main saloon windows (1 middle front, 2 forward port and starboard).
• Replacement of 3 x Raymarine indicators, wind, depth and speed (ST 60 by I 60).
• Installation of a windlass remote control.

Main Engine & Propeller Shaft:

• Replacement of 2 x cutlass bearings.
• Replacement of the stuffing box.
• Replacement of trust ball bearing.
• Replacement of the exhaust pipe.
• Cleaning of the 3 Go tanks.

Rudder:

• Replacement of the upper and lower stock bearings and the rudder trunk stuffing box.

Miscellaneous:

• External cover to blind the main saloon windows.

May 2022 – Prickly Bay and Spice Island Marine Services (South Grenada):

• External cover made for deck protection.
• Cover made for transom protection.
• Replacement of the two main manifold sea cocks.
• Installation of two transformers 24/12v to charge the batteries for the main engine and generator.

October 2022 – Prickly Bay and Spice Island Marine Services (South Grenada):

• Installation of 2 x semi-flexible solar panels (2 x 250 W) on the Bimini.
• Adjustment to the main cover to receive the solar panels, thus avoiding connection to shore power for long stays.

December 2022:

• Replaced all main sail battens.

COOL CAT is now positioned in the Caribbean and is ready for easy, relaxed and comfortable blue water sailing.

Owner's Comments

After buying Discovery 55, COOL CAT in the Channel Islands we returned to Berthon to prepare her for her new life with us. We left Lymington at the end of June 2020 and sailed directly to Lanzarote. COOL CAT stayed in Puerto Calero from July 2020 to January 2022. During that time we sailed regularly in the archipelago of the Canaries. COVID restricted our plans, which is why she stayed in the Canaries over this period.

We then crossed the Atlantic to St Lucia leaving on the 6th January and making landfall on the 23rd January 2022. We sailed through the Caribbean reaching Grenada at the end of April 2022. COOL CAT wintered ashore until the end of October – for 6 months, whilst we flew back to France. We returned to Grenada at the end of October, splashed the yacht and proceeded north. We enjoyed the winter season aboard COOL CAT in these lovely cruising grounds.

We have maintained COOL CAT to the highest standards having taken delivery of her after a refit at the hands of her first owners. We have found her to be a lovely platform for cruising as a couple. We are very sorry to be saying good bye to COOL CAT.
