REMEDY is a Hylas RS sailing vessel (Hylas 54) designed by German Frers, fabricated by Queen Long Marine as hull #8 and launched in 1999.

Hull #8 was exhibited by Hylas in the 2000 season boat shows on the East Coast, USA. This example was purchased the summer of 2001 and moved to Charlevoix, Michigan. During 2002-2016, REMEDY was sailed exclusively in The Great Lakes from her berth in Charlevoix and stored in heated winter storage for 18 years, beginning Winter 2001.

REMEDY was refit Winter 2015/Spring 2016 by Torresen’s Marine Services in Muskegon, Michigan. The refit included all new electronics, new galley layout, roller reefing and winches, stern davits for dinghy transport, Diesel engine rebuild with a new transmission. A 6-man Winslow offshore life raft was added to the stern railing.

Hylas 54, REMEDY is prepared for shorthanded, live aboard cruising in style, comfort and safety. Recently she has sailed in the Bahamas, coastal waters of the eastern U.S. from the Florida Keys to the Gulf of Maine. She was bought by her current owners pre Covid and they have now completed their plan and she must find a new owner.

She is a special yacht – with Simpson davits, Raymarine electronics, new batteries, North NPL Tour Ultra Z Norlam sails with sailkote applied – new 2021, solar panels, full engine overhaul (2022), convection microwave, Splendid washer/dryer combo, 37 gph water maker, GE Café four burner induction cook top and all new entertainment equipment including 44” Samsung Smart TV. Owner's Comments

From the day we met 40 years ago in Annapolis our life revolved around sailing. After 33 years of marriage, raising two great children, and finishing two successful careers in the Washington, D.C. area, we retired. Rather than do the normal things retirees do, within six months, we fulfilled the life-long dream of owning and living aboard our own sailboat. We bought a stunning 54-foot sailing yacht and named her “REMEDY.” At inception, we planned a 5-year journey, and as expected, we are ready for this chapter to close and move on to other adventures.

Sailing has been a core part of Steve’s life professionally, competitively, and recreationally. He held a 100-ton USCG license since 1983. For the first six years he was professional yacht captain and trans-oceanic delivery crewman, and in later years he raced for decades, and volunteered with the US Naval Academy’s sailing program. The early days were done without the aid of today’s chart plotters, satellite communications, and advance weather capabilities. Having sailed through hurricanes, tropical depressions and other adverse weather conditions, this experience instilled him with a deep appreciation for a quality boat that would reliably and safely arrive at harbor in reasonable comfort.

When we retired and decided to sell our lovely home and move aboard a sailboat and potentially circumnavigate the world, our boat manufacturer search became very narrow given the strict requirements we had for a reliable blue-water yacht to live aboard. We chose the Hylas 54 Raised Salon because of its outstanding features: cutter rig sail plan, center cockpit design, stiff Tarawan hull construction, deep draft, skeg rudder, and beautiful overall design. All these features fulfilled our search requirements completely.
Our search brought us to this stunning Hylas 54. It was truly love at first sight. Not only was she incredibly beautiful inside and out, but she only had one prior owner and spent 18 years of her life in the Great Lakes of Michigan where she was used 5 months of the year and was stored in an environmentally-controlled shed during the winter months. REMEDY’s original owner performed a major refit in 2016. Additionally, in 4 years of ownership, we made major upgrades to improve performance, safety, and comfort.

These include

  • New Selden mast, boom, vang, standing and running rigging.
  • North NPL Tour Ultra X sails.
  • Jibe prevention system.
  • Furlex 404E 2 speed electric furling.
  • Sea Frost refrigeration.
  • HVAC.
  • Solar panels.
  • High-Definition Radar.
  • Communications equipment.
  • Gori 3 bladed propeller.
  • 24-volt Maxwell 3500 windlass.
  • Full cockpit enclosure.
  • RO watermaker.
  • Extensive engine overhaul.

REMEDY truly lives up to the Hylas 54 reputation – a fast and powerful blue-water boat that is comfortable and safe under any condition, and a gorgeous yacht at dockside. She is an absolute joy to sail. Her powerful sails and exceptionally balanced hull design make for a comfortable sail in winds that would keep other boats at anchor. A key feature we needed was having a sailboat we could comfortably live aboard full-time that was reliable, spacious, and manageable for two people to sail. Our world-class yacht has everything we need to feel at home wherever we go. With three refrigeration units, modern galley, ample storage, reliable power, and many other comforts of home, we have been able to go everywhere we planned comfortably and safely.

We purchased REMEDY just ahead of the COVID-19 lockdown that restricted our sailing plans and circumnavigation. Once restrictions were lifted, we were able to continue our cruising experience to wonderful places. It has been our joy to bring family and friends aboard to enjoy the thrill of sailing we have always cherished. REMEDY has taken us up and down the east coast of the U.S. many times to explore new areas, visit family and friends, and meet many new sailing friends. REMEDY’s three staterooms, spacious salon and cockpit, allowed us to travel and entertain with ease. We have gone to the Florida Keys, the Dry Tortugas, and up Florida’s Gulf Coast. Our travels have taken us offshore to New York City, throughout New England, the rocky coast of Maine, and back home to the Chesapeake Bay. This past year, we spent three glorious months in the Bahamas over the winter, back to Florida, and up the coast.

It is bittersweet to reach the end of our five-year plan, but we both agree that we are satisfied with our journey and want to move on to explore things we cannot reach aboard REMEDY. Being able to see precious family in Virginia, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Colorado more frequently is a big reason we want to come ashore. Having the freedom to travel to other areas and countries is another draw that brings us back to land.

We hope the next owner loves and cares for REMEDY as much as we have. She has a strong heart and is a joy to sail.
